OV-chipkaart and Checking In on Public Transport
In the Netherlands, you travel on public transport with the OV-chipkaart. You use this card to check in on the bus, tram, metro, and train. Without checking in, you can't travel or you'll get a fine.

What is an OV-chipkaart?
The OV-chipkaart is a plastic card that lets you travel on public transport all over the Netherlands. You buy it at an OV ticket machine at the station, at a ticket office, or online. The card costs €7.50 (one-time, without balance).
You can buy an anonymous or personal OV-chipkaart. An anonymous card isn't linked to anyone's name, and you can give it to someone else. A personal card is in your name with your photo, handy for subscriptions or automatic top-up.
How do you check in and out?
- I check in by holding the card against the pole or gate. You hear a beep and see a green light.
- On the bus or tram: hold your card against the card reader next to the door. Wait until you hear a beep.
- On the metro or train: find an OV gate. Hold your card against the round screen. The gate opens.
- Don't forget to check out when you leave the station or get off the bus. Hold your card against the pole again. You hear a beep and the amount is calculated.
Balance and Traveling
Make sure you have enough balance on your OV-chipkaart before you travel. For the train, you need at least €20; for bus/tram/metro, €4. You can top up at the top-up machine at the station, at some shops, or online. Always check your balance before you leave.
Common Mistakes and Tips
- Tip: don't forget to check out! If you don't check out, you pay the maximum fare (often €20 or more for the train). You can request a refund later, but that's extra work.
- Tip: always check that the gate shows a green light. If it's red, checking in didn't work. Try again.
- Tip: use the OV-chipkaart app or website to view your travel history and top up your balance.
