In Nederland is pinnen de norm. De meeste mensen betalen met een pinpas of met hun telefoon. Contant geld wordt steeds minder gebruikt.

Contactloos betalen is snel en makkelijk. Je houdt je pas of telefoon bij de betaalautomaat. Voor kleine bedragen hoef je geen pincode in te voeren. In deze gids lees je hoe het werkt en wat je zegt bij de kassa.

Wat is pinnen en contactloos betalen?

Pinnen betekent dat je met je bankpas betaalt. Je steekt de pas in de automaat of houdt hem ervoor. Daarna typ je je pincode in. Contactloos betalen is nog sneller: je houdt je pas of telefoon vlak bij de automaat. Voor bedragen tot 25 euro (controleer dit bij je bank) hoef je geen pincode in te voeren.

Bij bedragen boven de 25 euro moet je vaak alsnog je pincode invoeren. Soms vraagt de automaat ook een pincode voor de veiligheid. Je kunt ook betalen met je telefoon of smartwatch, als je deze hebt gekoppeld aan je bank.

Wat moet je doen bij de kassa?

Als je iets koopt, zeg je wat je wilt. De kassamedewerker zegt het bedrag. Dan pak je je pinpas of telefoon. Houd de pas bij de automaat of steek hem in de gleuf. Wacht tot het lampje groen wordt of het geluidje klinkt. Als er om een pincode wordt gevraagd, typ je die in op het toetsenbord. Vergeet niet je pas terug te pakken!

Soms vraagt de automaat of je een bonnetje wilt. Je kunt 'ja' of 'nee' zeggen. Wil je een bon, dan drukt de automaat er een af.

Tip: Houd je pas stil bij de automaat. Beweeg niet te snel, anders werkt het niet.
Tip: Controleer of je pinpas contactloos betalen ondersteunt. Soms moet je dit eerst activeren via je bank.
Fout: Vergeten je pas uit de automaat te halen. Veel mensen laten hun pas liggen. Check altijd of je hem terug hebt.
Fout: Te dicht bij de automaat staan met twee passen in je portemonnee. Haal de juiste pas eruit.

De meeste winkels accepteren pinnen, maar niet allemaal contant geld. Bij supermarkten kun je meestal wel contant betalen, maar bij kleine winkels soms niet. Vraag het gewoon: 'Kan ik contant betalen?'

Wat als ik mijn pincode vergeet?

Probeer het nog een keer. Na drie keer fout wordt je pas geblokkeerd. Bel dan je bank om een nieuwe pincode aan te vragen.

Is contactloos betalen veilig?

Ja, het is veilig. Voor grote bedragen moet je een pincode invoeren. Ook kun je een limiet instellen bij je bank. Als je pas kwijtraakt, bel je direct je bank om hem te blokkeren.

Kan ik met mijn buitenlandse pas pinnen in Nederland?

Dat hangt van je bank af. De meeste internationale passen werken in Nederland, maar er kunnen kosten zijn. Vraag het na bij je eigen bank.

Contactless payment is fast and easy. You hold your card or phone near the payment terminal. For small amounts, you don't need to enter your PIN. In this guide, you'll learn how it works and what to say at the checkout.

What is paying by card and contactless?

Paying by card means you pay with your bank card. You insert the card into the terminal or hold it in front. Then you enter your PIN. Contactless payment is even faster: you hold your card or phone close to the terminal. For amounts up to 25 euros (check with your bank), you don't need to enter your PIN.

For amounts above 25 euros, you often still need to enter your PIN. Sometimes the terminal also asks for a PIN for security. You can also pay with your phone or smartwatch if you've linked it to your bank.

What do you do at the checkout?

When you buy something, you say what you want. The cashier tells you the amount. Then you take out your debit card or phone. Hold the card near the terminal or insert it into the slot. Wait until the light turns green or you hear a sound. If it asks for a PIN, type it in on the keypad. Don't forget to take your card back!

Sometimes the terminal asks if you want a receipt. You can say 'yes' or 'no'. If you want a receipt, the terminal prints one.

Common mistakes and tips

Tip: Hold your card still near the terminal. Don't move too fast, or it won't work.
Tip: Check if your debit card supports contactless. Sometimes you need to activate it first through your bank.
Mistake: Forgetting to take your card out of the terminal. Many people leave their card behind. Always check that you have it back.
Mistake: Standing too close to the terminal with two cards in your wallet. Take out the right card.

Do I always have to pay by card, or can I also pay with cash?

Most shops accept card payments, but not all accept cash. At supermarkets, you can usually pay with cash, but at small shops sometimes not. Just ask: 'Can I pay with cash?'

What if I forget my PIN?

Try again. After three wrong attempts, your card will be blocked. Then call your bank to request a new PIN.
