Inburgering Exam Results: Where and When You See Them
You just took your exam at DUO. Your heart is still pounding. And then that one question: where and when do I see the results of my inburgering exam? The short answer: your results appear in Mijn Inburgering, the personal section of inburgeren.nl. You log in there with your DigiD. Check with DUO or your municipality how you receive your result. Everything is digital.
In the Netherlands, the results of your inburgering exam are important for your residence permit, your naturalisation, and sometimes for your work or rental home. The municipality, DUO, and IND all look at the same system. If you do not see your results on time, you could miss a deadline. That is why it is smart to know exactly where to look and how long it normally takes. In this guide, we explain it step by step, with example sentences you can use right away.
We cover: where you see the results, how long it takes, what the results mean for the Wet inburgering 2013 and the B1 route of the Wet inburgering 2021, and what to do if something goes wrong. You do not need to be an expert. If you have DigiD and a quiet spot, you will figure it out. We refer you to DUO, IND, and the municipality for the exact, current rules. Let's get started.
Where Do You See the Results of Your Inburgering Exam?
The official place is Mijn Inburgering on inburgeren.nl. You log in with your DigiD. There you see per exam component whether you passed. You also see your score and the date the result was determined. If you took the exam at DUO, the result appears automatically in this system. You do not need to call or email to get your grade.
Some people think the result is sent to their home address. That is usually not the case. Check with DUO how you receive your result. The municipality can also see your result if you fall under the Wet inburgering 2021, because the municipality guides you then. But the source remains Mijn Inburgering. So make sure your DigiD works and your login details are correct.
For the Staatsexamen NT2, there is a separate system. Check with DUO or on the Staatsexamen NT2 website where you see the result of Programme I (B1) and Programme II (B2). DUO handles the registration and the result. The content of the exam is set by CvTE. So always check the Staatsexamen NT2 site for the exact procedure.
Note: KNM is a separate exam. The result of KNM you also see in Mijn Inburgering. KNM is separate from the Staatsexamen NT2. If you do both, you will see two separate results. Do not confuse them with each other.
When Do You See the Results? Timelines and What Is Normal
How long it takes before you see the result differs per exam and per moment. Check with DUO or your municipality what applies to you. Sometimes it is faster, sometimes it takes longer due to busy periods. Check with DUO or your municipality what applies to you. Check with DUO or your municipality what applies to you.
The exact timelines change. Sometimes DUO adjusts the schedule, for example around holidays or with technical problems. That is why we do not give hard weeks or days here. You can always find the current timeline on inburgeren.nl or on staatsexamensnt2.nl. There you also find what to do if your result is later than expected. If you are worried, you can contact DUO via the contact page on inburgeren.nl.
For people under the Wet inburgering 2013: you must pass your exams within 3 years. The result is therefore part of a bigger whole. For the B1 route of the Wet inburgering 2021: you must pass your language exams at B1 within 3 years, plus KNM. The municipality keeps track of your progress. If your result comes too late, that can affect your planning. So make sure you log in on time.
If you have taken an exam and you still see nothing after the expected period, do not wait too long. Check whether your exam was registered correctly. Contact DUO if your result does not appear. A phone call or message to DUO can help then.
What Do the Results per Component Mean?
Each component has its own result. You see whether you passed or not. With the digital exams, you often get to see a score. That score shows how close you were to the threshold. That is useful if you have to retake: you know where to practise. With the Staatsexamen NT2, you get a grade per skill. For Programme I (B1), you must pass all components sufficiently. For Programme II (B2), the same applies at B2 level.
Check with DUO or your municipality what the rules are for resits. You can retake that one component. That is called a resit. Check with DUO or your municipality what you need to do for a resit. The results of your earlier components remain valid. So you only need to pass the missing piece. This is important to know, because it saves a lot of time and stress.
For KNM, you get one result: pass or fail. KNM is a knowledge exam about eight themes, including history and geography. The questions are in simple Dutch at A2 level. You see your result in Mijn Inburgering. If you do not pass, you can take the exam again. There is no separate grade you must achieve for a subtopic.
Under the Wet inburgering 2013, you must pass your language exams at A2 or higher. Under the B1 route of the Wet inburgering 2021, you must pass at B1. If you are on the B1 route and have had at least 600 hours of lessons, you can discuss with the municipality whether scaling down to A2 is possible. That is called scaling down. The result of your exams shows which level you have achieved. Sometimes that is A2, sometimes B1. Your municipality assesses whether that is enough for your route.
Results and the Law: 2013 versus 2021
The law determines which level you need. The Wet inburgering 2013 applies to people who became subject to the inburgering obligation before 1 January 2022. They must pass language at A2 or higher, plus KNM. Depending on when their obligation started, they must also do ONA (Orientation on the Dutch Labour Market) and the participation declaration. The result of your exams shows whether you meet those requirements.
The Wet inburgering 2021 applies to everyone who became subject to the inburgering obligation from 1 January 2022. There are three routes: the B1 route, the education route, and the self-reliance route (Z route). The B1 route requires language at B1 level, plus KNM. The municipality also arranges the participation declaration trajectory (PVT) and the Labour Market & Participation Module (MAP). The education route is mainly for young people and requires language at B1 or higher. The Z route requires Dutch at A1 level, for people for whom the other routes are too difficult.
Your result on Mijn Inburgering shows which level you have achieved. If you are on the B1 route and you achieve A2, that is not automatically enough. You then need to talk to the municipality about scaling down. If you are on the Z route, A1 is the goal. The result is therefore always linked to your route and your law. Do not confuse them: not all inburgering is A2, and not all inburgering is B1.
The Staatsexamen NT2 counts for the language part of the B1 route and the education route. Programme I (B1) and Programme II (B2) are both possible. The Staatsexamen NT2 does not replace KNM. You must do KNM separately. You see the result of your Staatsexamen NT2 separately from your KNM result.
What If Your Result Is Not Good? Resits and Planning
If you do not pass, it is not a disaster. You can retake. You must register again via Mijn Inburgering or via the Staatsexamen NT2 website. Pay attention to the registration deadlines. Check with DUO or your municipality what applies to you. So plan your next step immediately after your result. Do not wait until the last month of your inburgering term.
For a resit, it is smart to practise specifically for the component you failed. If you failed Reading, read Dutch texts for 20 minutes every day. If you failed Speaking, practise out loud with someone or with an app. Dutch Fluency NT2 has exam-style exercises for Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. That way you can work precisely on your weak spot.
If you fall under the B1 route and you do not achieve B1, but you have had 600 hours of lessons, you can talk to the municipality about scaling down to A2. That does not mean you just stop. You still have to pass your exams, but at a lower level. The municipality must agree to this. Without that agreement, B1 remains the goal.
For people under the Wet inburgering 2013: you must get your diploma within 3 years. If your result comes too late or you do not pass on time, you can run into problems with your residence permit or naturalisation. Then contact your municipality and IND immediately. They can tell you what the possibilities are.
Results and Naturalisation: What to Watch Out For
If you want to become a Dutch citizen, you need an inburgering diploma at A2 level or higher. That can be via the Wet inburgering 2013 or via the Wet inburgering 2021. A Staatsexamen NT2 diploma (Programme I or Programme II) also counts. Check with IND or your municipality what proof you need. Check with IND which rules for naturalisation apply to you.
There is a proposal to raise the naturalisation requirement to B1, but that has not yet been implemented. The current rule is A2 or higher. Always check the current rules at IND, because they can change. The standard naturalisation term is 5 years of continuous residence with a valid residence permit. IND has a list of exceptions. You apply for naturalisation at your municipality.
For a permanent residence permit, an EU long-term resident permit, or a non-temporary humanitarian permit, it usually applies that you must meet the inburgering requirement. That means: an inburgering diploma. So your result is not just a grade; it is a key to more rights in the Netherlands. Keep your diploma safe, also digitally.
DUO manages the exams and the loans. The municipality guides people under the Wet inburgering 2021. IND decides on residence permits and naturalisation. CvTE sets the content of the Staatsexamen NT2. If you have questions about your result in relation to your residence, ask IND or your municipality. They know which rules apply to you.

Step-by-Step Plan: What You Do This Week
- Step 1: Check whether your DigiD works. Log in to Mijn Inburgering via inburgeren.nl. If your DigiD does not work, request a new one via digid.nl. Without DigiD you cannot see your result.
- Step 2: Check the DUO or Staatsexamen NT2 website for the current timeline for your exam. Note the date you expect your result. Set a reminder in your phone.
- Step 3: Log in to Mijn Inburgering every week. Sometimes the result appears earlier than you think. You do not have to wait for a letter.
- Step 4: When your result is there, read carefully which components you passed and which you did not. Take a photo or screenshot of your result. Keep it in a safe place.
- Step 5: Did you fail a component? Register for a resit immediately. Do not wait too long, because registration deadlines can shift.
- Step 6: Are you unsure whether your result is enough for your route or for naturalisation? Contact your municipality or IND. They can tell you exactly which requirements apply to you.
Common Mistakes (and What Works Instead)
- Mistake: waiting for a letter with your result. Fix: your result is in Mijn Inburgering. Log in there with your DigiD.
- Mistake: thinking you have to retake all exams if you fail one component. Fix: you can retake per component. You only need to pass the missing part.
- Mistake: not logging in because you are afraid of the result. Fix: you need the result for your planning. The sooner you know, the better you can adjust.
- Mistake: assuming A2 is always enough. Fix: check which law and route you fall under. The Wet inburgering 2013 requires A2. The B1 route of the Wet inburgering 2021 requires B1, unless your municipality approves scaling down.
- Mistake: confusing KNM and Staatsexamen NT2. Fix: they are separate exams with separate results. KNM is a knowledge exam. Staatsexamen NT2 is a language exam.
- Mistake: not saving your result. Fix: take a screenshot and keep your diploma digitally and on paper. You will need it later for naturalisation or your residence permit.

How to Practise This (Dutch Fluency + Extra)
Practising in exam style helps you be less nervous and positively influence your result. On Dutch Fluency NT2 you find exercises for Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. The exercises resemble the real exams, but they are not official exam questions. You can use them to get used to the question format and the time pressure. That way you know better where you stand before you take the real exam.
If you know which component you find difficult, you can practise specifically. Use the feedback to see what you still need to improve. Repeat the exercises until you feel more confident. Remember: practising does not guarantee success, but it does help you be better prepared. The real result depends on your exam on the day itself.
Want to practise more? Try the free practice exams on Dutch Fluency NT2. They are made for people who want to achieve A2 or B1. You can start right away, without complicated steps. The more you practise, the calmer you will be on the day of your exam.
