Person delivering a parcel with PostNL

Post and Parcels with PostNL

In the Netherlands, we send and receive a lot of mail and parcels. PostNL is the largest postal company. They deliver letters and parcels to people's homes.

In this guide, you'll learn how to send a parcel, how to receive one, and what to do if you haven't received something. So you'll know exactly what to expect.

How does PostNL work?

PostNL delivers mail and parcels on weekdays. Sometimes also on Saturdays. You can have a parcel delivered to your home, but also to a PostNL point, such as a supermarket or a shop.

If you send a parcel, you can register it online with PostNL. Then you print a label and stick it on the box. You can then bring the parcel to a PostNL point or have it picked up at home.

Practical phrases for mail and parcels

Sending a parcel in 4 steps

Step 1: Weigh your parcel and measure the dimensions. You need this to choose the correct shipping label.

Step 2: Go to the PostNL website or use the app. Choose the type of parcel, for example 'domestic' or 'international'. Pay online.

Step 3: Print the shipping label and stick it on the box. Make sure the label is clearly readable.

Step 4: Bring the parcel to a PostNL point or schedule a pickup. Keep the track-and-trace code to follow your parcel.

Receiving a parcel

If someone sends a parcel to you, you usually get a message from PostNL. That message says when the parcel will arrive and whether you need to be at home.

If you're not home, the delivery person will try to deliver it to the neighbors. Or you can pick up the parcel at a PostNL point. Then bring your ID and the pickup code.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if my parcel hasn't been delivered?

First, check the track-and-trace code. If it says 'delivered' but you haven't received anything, ask your neighbors if they have it. If not, contact PostNL via the website or app.

How much does it cost to send a parcel?

That depends on the weight and dimensions. For a small parcel, you pay around 4 euros. Check the current prices on the PostNL website.

Can I send a parcel abroad?

Yes, you can. You need to choose the correct label and fill in the address completely. The costs are higher than within the Netherlands. Check the conditions on the PostNL website.
