Applying for Rent and Healthcare Allowance: A Practical Guide
Do you live in the Netherlands and have a low income? Then you might be able to get rent allowance and healthcare allowance. This is money from the government to keep your rent and health insurance affordable.
In this guide, we explain what allowances are, who is entitled to them, and how to apply. We also give example sentences you can use when applying.
What are rent and healthcare allowance?
Rent allowance is a contribution from the government for people with low rent. You get it if your rent is not too high and your income is low. Healthcare allowance is a contribution for health insurance. Everyone in the Netherlands must have health insurance, and with healthcare allowance, it becomes cheaper.
You can apply for both allowances at the Tax and Customs Administration (Belastingdienst). You do this online via toeslagen.nl. It is important to apply on time, otherwise you miss out on money.

- I would like to apply for rent allowance. My rent is €600 per month.
- Am I entitled to healthcare allowance? My income is €1,500 per month.

How do you apply for allowances?
Go to toeslagen.nl and log in with your DigiD. DigiD is a digital signature you need for government websites. Apply for DigiD if you don't have one yet.
Fill in the form. You will need your citizen service number (BSN), your rental contract, and your health insurance. The Tax and Customs Administration calculates how much allowance you will get. This depends on your income, your assets, and your rent or premium.
Note: you must apply for allowances every year. Do this before April 1 of the following year. Too late? Then you will get less or no allowance.
Common mistakes and tips
- Tip 1: Apply for allowances as soon as you come to live in the Netherlands. Even if you don't have a fixed income yet.
- Tip 2: Always report your correct income. If you receive too much allowance, you will have to pay it back later.
- Tip 3: Change your address or income? Report it immediately to the Tax and Customs Administration. This prevents problems.

When do I get rent allowance?
You get rent allowance if your rent is not higher than €763.47 (2024) and your income is below a certain limit. You must also rent an independent dwelling.
How long does it take before I get allowance?
After your application, it usually takes 2 to 4 weeks before you hear whether you get allowance. The money is then deposited into your account monthly.
What should I do if I received too much allowance?
The Tax and Customs Administration sends you a letter. You must pay back the amount you received too much. This can be done in one go or in installments.
